I’m often asked to reveal the answer to the big question: what is the secret behind internet marketing, the one new skill to learn?  I’m also asked a similar question.  Is there one thing I could do to improve traffic and my overall page rank that improves sales for my online business?

Learning A New Skill Internet Marketing-the first question first

When it comes to the big secret on internet marketing, I suspect you won’t be surprised.  There is no one big secret. There isn’t just one new skill to learn.  Learning a new skill like online marketing and then competing online is becoming harder and harder every day.

Once you learn a new skill like internet marketing, it quickly becomes a full time job once you start, and in some cases, you are competing against the most sophisticated internet marketers in the world, with some of the best performing internet tools that give them an uneven playing field- along with the deepest pockets when it comes to financial resources that support their marketing efforts.   But don’t be dismayed, I do have some interesting insight to reveal what you should do and what you shouldn’t do as well as a peak at a high performance internet skill and internet performance tool that will work for anyone wanting to start an online business.

Learn a new skill internet marketing- the second question next

Is there one thing I should be doing for internet marketing is the next question.  Truth is, of course there is no one thing you should be doing.  If that were true, everyone would be doing just that one thing.

Learn a new skill internet marketing- what shouldn’t I be doing

Look, I’m a Blogger and (PIM) Professional Internet Marketer.  On my blog,I make valuable content available for my readers for free.  I’m also a consumer.  That means that I am pretty much just like you.  If you search online for information, sooner or later you will start to get bombarded with offers to get rich quick, make millions overnight.  I call it white noise.  In fact seldom does a day go by that I don’t get dozens of those types of offerings.  Most of the time, I get the same offer from different people all doing the same thing.  Now that is annoying.  In any case, this is the white noise I refer too and the 95% of what you need to avoid.

Typically these marketers provide no real value and just pass on the internet offering as affiliates.  When they say, Jimmy made $37,000 in revenues with this system; chances are real good he or she is not Jimmy.  They are passing the testimonials along with the offer.  The one internet marketer that gets your attention may just get your order.  These internet marketers sometimes don’t even own websites.  They just do email marketing as affiliates.

In a simple response to what you should be doing for internet marketing: do not listen to 95% of what you hear and do not buy what they promise.  Lots of white noise out there and typically 95% of these offering do not deliver on their promise.  Sure 95% is a big number, but a real number.  Know how I know?  It’s a fact- 95% of all internet marketing companies do not make money and fail terribly at it in the process.

Listen to the other 5% to be good at internet marketing.  Sounds easy but how do you know one from the other?  That is the tough question.  Remember, these internet marketers are a sophisticated bunch.  If you try every offer and promotion that comes your way, you will never get anything done.  The answer lies in stopping the non-sense and getting the right skills to do the right tasks to be accomplished online.

It all starts with trust.  If you trust this person, you should be able to trust what they say about a product.  Personally I have tried literally dozens and dozens of these affiliate programs including video marketing programs, email list building offers and a litany of others.  Honestly, I could do an expose of all of them with this simple truth.  They do not deliver riches like they promise.  Check out a few of the ones I bought into with names like:

  • Tube Blaster said learn a new skill for video marketing would make me thousands
  • Video Marketing Revealed- these new skills would get me ranked on page 1
  • Pigeon Hole- the one key secret to successful online list building
  • Facebook Anarchy-learn new skills to market on Facebook fell way short
  • List Building Dynamite- there was no learn a new skill here at all

Learn a new skill internet marketing- now think about this

While they each had something to offer you did not need to buy into a program that did not deliver anywhere near the promise they made about instant riches, thousands in cash in 30 days or huge financial successes when you buy their product.

They say there is a sucker born every minute, and I seem to be one for sure, every time I buy into this non-sense.  My only choice and my recommendation to you are this.  Stick to the basics of internet marketing.  Learn new skills about internet marketing to shore up that skill set.  That is your best choice going forward.

Learn a new skill internet marketing- think about this a second to prove my point further

Imagine for a second you made $39,000 in one month in internet marketing and doing what you do best.  If the process works, what would you do?  Would you offer this supposed secret for $7, 17 or even 37 dollars, or would you continue to scale that process up to make more and more money.  Why would you stop what you are doing, if it really works to create a product on your process and share it with people wanting to learn new skills on internet marketing for the few dollars you get?

Makes no sense to me and the standard quote stands the test of time.  If it’s too good to be true, it is.  There is a sucker born every minute, and I sure seem to be one of those too….but not anymore!!!

Learn a new skill internet marketing- taking on the big dogs

But what if we actually found internet skills and performance tools that fit in that 5% success factor for internet marketing?   A unique approach to internet marketing that has at its core: sound internet marketing principles…in a turnkey system that requires no technical work and easy for anyone to do?  Meaning, it’s scalable and can easily be duplicated.  Now that would get my attention and that would sure catch my eye!

So, here’s what I’m thinking right now.    I think I may have found one, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding.  I’m only half way through training videos and content but what I see makes total sense and I buy into their overall philosophy.

I’m considering running a case study on this blog based on this new integrated internet marketing concept.  The case study will start at the beginning of launching a new online business.  I will follow this new program step by step, using the tools they provide and content and information they provide.  I will include and disclose everything including: what I did, as well as measuring the success of this new business or multiple businesses over the next 30, 60 90 days.  The case study will also include posts each step of the way to what was done.  I will actually sequence the entire process.  Then and only then will you be able to determine for yourself if this new internet marketing model works or not.  Heck, you might even want to try it yourself if it does what I think it will do.  Where else can you witness a first-hand case study and live testimonial on how to build an internet business successfully, before you ever have to spend a dollar?

I know internet marketing and it is difficult.  If you want an integrated and effective and easy internet marketing system or if you want to learn a new skill for internet marketing, then you will not want to miss this once it starts, so stay tuned.  Heck, I will show you how I picked my niche, how I set up my website/blog, I will even share the income the new online business generates including how little it cost me to set up and how little time I put in to it.

I will track and measure, time, expenses and profits…and I will let you all be the judge.  I will call the case study “Showcasing- The Easiest Way To Build An Online Business”.  Step, by step, post by post…tell your friends, talk it up at the water cooler and stay tuned to learn a new skill blog.  Just so you know, as of this post, I have no ideas or products in mind.  That is the real exciting part for me.  I will go through the development of all of this as I start this case study.  This is the best way I know of to learn a new skill like internet marketing.

When it comes to new skills for marketing a business, there is no better skill set today than being an Internet Marketer.  I am fortunate to have just received (feb. 2012) my PIM designation.  PIM stands for Professional Internet Marketer.  That designation provides me all the internet skills and tools and skills required to successfully market online products and services for myself, or others.

It’s time to get back to the storyline of this post.  Every ten years, I purchase a new marketing manual.  Besides putting me to sleep at night, it keeps me abreast of changes and trends in marketing.  Look how marketing has evolved and the role internet marketing plays in 2012.

  • 1981 old fashion,100% traditional organic marketing to mass markets
  • 1991 85% was traditional organic marketing to mass markets, 15% e-marketing to mass markets
  • 2011- 35% e-marketing to niche markets and 65% traditional organic marketing

Let’s review the role of the Internet Marketer and the subject of internet marketing in terms even I can understand.  The universal role for the internet marketer is to drive traffic.  To be more accurate, it’s to attract traffic and there is a big difference between then and we will get into that as the subject comes up.  Internet marketing therefore, is all about attracting traffic to your website or blog.

Now we know the high A of internet marketing:  attracting visitors to your site, so let’s move forward.

The Internet Marketer utilizes the body of knowledge called internet marketing.  This is a broad term that envelops all forms of advertising and marketing for a businesses, marketing companies, professionals, and individuals that market their products and services over the internet.  Stay focused on the universal objective of internet marketing: attracting traffic or visitors and you won’t be consumed by all the extras.

In this post I have reviewed what an Internet Marketer does and what internet marketing is about.  ALong this journey, I will venture into the basics and advanced internet skills and tools you can use to successfully market your own business online.  You can market products, services, information almost anything you decide to market.  Learn this once, and you will know all the tricks and secrets to being a successful internet marketer.   But remember this, the journey is long but the rewards from these new skills are well worth the effort.

At the same time, along the internet marketing journey, I will mix in some posts for learning new skills besides internet marketing like: Forecasting: finding trends and patterns to identify that next big idea, as well as including learning new skills for work, for business development and just for fun.

While you may not have the PIM designation when this journey is complete, you will have all the internet skills and tools to be successful at internet marketing.  I may even turn this into a live case study and membership site to reveal how I launch a new online business model, each step of the way.  If I do, you will then see how effective I am at attracting customers and getting them to take the actions that your business model dictates.  By the way, taking some action is the second universal objective for the Internet Marketer and internet marketing.  (You will learn all about the 6 types of internet business models, and their online objectives in a couple of posts from now.  You won’t want to miss this information.)

In our first post, we mentioned how important it is to learn new skills like influence and persuasion.  We also laid the groundwork and basics for the subject of influence and persuasion.  To keep that post length a little shorter, we broke it into 2 parts.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines manipulation: “Shrewd or devious management, especially for one’s own advantage”.  This is most fitting when discussing the difference between influence and persuasion compared to manipulation.   There is no way we can leave this difference out of the article.

With influence and persuasion, it’s all about the opportunity for two people to come together on an opinion that is mutually beneficial. No one wins if someone loses and manipulation or hard selling tactics is not effective long term. In order for you to be successful long term with selling your thoughts and ideas, it has to be a win-win.

  1. The emotional connection
  2. Trust
  3. Listeners point of view

New skills- Influence and persuasion the emotional connection is the 1st key

Do you have trouble getting your thoughts or ideas across? When you speak, do others listen to you, or do you feel your listener wandering?

Effective influence and persuasion is basic communications for “convincing” others.  This new skill is essential in business and everyday life. According to Bert Decker’s book: “You Have To Be Believed To Be Heard”, the most powerful communications reaches not only the mind but also the heart. I highly recommend this book for persuading and influencing others.

Influence and persuasion- trust is the 2nd key

It comes down to a simple question. Who will they trust?  At the end of the day, it always comes down to trust.  Do you trust them, or not?  Do you believe what they are saying, or not?  Is this person credible, or not?

Trust is so valuable that we spend our entire lives building trust and credibility, and rightfully so.  The more effective we are in doing that, the more successful you will be when it comes to influence and persuasion.

Influence and persuasion- listener’s point of view is the 3nd key

OK listeners, listen up!!!.  This is 2012, hardly a new year by now.  Get this right and you will have a happy new year.  The “listeners’ point of view is the foundation, cornerstone and starting point for influence and persuasion.   When you get this right and have the other two keys in place…it’s like presto.  Being effective at influence and persuasion opens the golden treasures to being more successful, more productive and more valuable….and more influential.  You are what we call- a person of influence.

In the next generation of influence and persuasion, it’s not really about you.  No one cares that you have a great idea.  Nobody is really interested in the products you sell.  When you get the right perspective on how to influence and persuade, you will be more effective and more successful at it.

You must know and understand your listener.  When you start off with “I have this great (product or idea or whatever the situation) I know you will like”, you just triggered the self preservation mechanism I discussed in the first post.  If your listener hasn’t already said no, he is already thinking no.

New skills- influence and persuasion is all about knowing your listener

In business you need to identify what they call the pain, or problem area:  When you know your listener, you know what:

  • Keeps them from falling asleep?
  • They are they really concerned about?
  • Frustrates them?
  • They are angry about and who are they angry with?
  • What they have to do and must do in their business to succeed or to grow it to the next level

In your personal lives, you identify the pleaser:  When you know your listener, you know what:

  • They truly desire most?
  • Excites your listener?
  • Appeals to them being happy?

New skills-influence and persuasion answering the two most important questions

Since influence and persuasion is used in both our everyday lives and in business, I will give you approaches to both perspectives.  When you can identify the top two pains of your listener, you are ready to start your presentation for the business perspective.  When you can identify the top two pleasers for your listener, you are ready to start your presentation for the personal perspective.

A quick comment on presentations.  A presentation is how you get others to understand and accept your ideas. In simple terms, it has an

  • Opening- with the listener’s point of view
  • Body- what you are trying to get others to understand or accept your ideas on
  • Benefits- why this solves the pain or pleaser
  • Answers to objections- why the benefits solve the issues
  • Call to action- to do something by a certain date

Here are the simple steps to influence and persuasion for a successful presentation and in this sequence.

  1. Start with the listeners point of view
  2. Show them how benefits solve the problem
  3. Prepare a list of objections that they will most likely have
  4. Summarize the listeners point of view again
  5. Have them take the action you want by a certain time frame.

Here are two examples.  The first is convincing someone on a new idea you have, the second is convincing your friends that Saturday night dinner is at the place you want to go, even though everyone has their favorite spot in mind.

Selling your idea on a new product you developed:  “Dan I know you want to attract new markets and increase your company’s profits.  New products are the heart beat of every company, especially when they appeal to your target customers and meet your profit objectives.  My idea will help you deliver those customers and add more profit to your bottom line.  You may be thinking, how can I afford to develop new products or spend money to buy them.  Dan, you don’t have to, in fact you don’t even need to buy my super widget product.  We can do a joint venture, and I will make 8% on any sales you make and I will help you to market it.”  We need a short follow up meeting to review the concept.”  Think you may get a yes here?

Selling your friends on your dinner location:

“Hey Tom and Mary.  I know you guys love the hustle and bustle in a white table cloth establishment.  And Carl and Rose, you just mentioned you love fine Italian.  Honey, we should think about Napoli’s Fine Classic Italian restaurant Saturday night.  Now I know everyone is thinking of their favorite spots, but tonight seems like it should be special, different and upbeat.  It’s not the last supper- a little humor, and this place is really heating up in the news!  I will handle the reservations for six at 8 PM.”   I think you made a good case and would likely convince the group.

Besides some  great insight on innovation, we also use the term destiny for those listeners  that believe “destiny prevails, ”and for those doubters that believe destiny does  not exist let alone prevail,  we use the  term life’s path as the meaning behind destiny.

What is innovation? According to Merriam-Webster, innovation is:

1 : the  introduction of something new

2 : a new  idea, method or device

New skills- a new year

With the New  Year and the birth of 2012, most people view the holiday as a reflective  period, as they transition into a New Year.   The New Year for most people is about stopping or quitting something  they don’t like and want to change about themselves, or it’s the creation of promises  for an improved and better you.

So let’s  look at this subject as a way to potentially make 2012 not only a great year,  but potentially one that will change your life, your so called destiny and life’s path.

New skills innovation, change and creativity

You can’t  talk about innovation without talking about change and creativity.  At the core of innovation lies the need for  improvement.  That’s where the change
comes in.  At the core of innovation lies  creativity.  Creativity is clearly the
catalyst for change, innovation and improvement.

But  innovation is not about stopping smoking, quitting biting your nails or a way to  support the promises we make to ourselves in the form of resolutions.  So keep reading to learn more about what we  mean when we say:  innovation and change  your destiny and life’s path.

To do that,  we need to dial in a little deeper into innovation, sometimes referred to as an idea.  An idea is useful only to the inventor unless it is offered to the public. If the idea improves some product, process or service for the public, then that idea transforms into an innovation.

An innovation can be big or small. Brand-new, or just a bit different: it doesn’t
matter. An innovation can be clearly complex or seemingly simple.  Innovations are often thought of in terms of technical achievement, but can also be a design or process improvement: how you do things. A new product idea, something that solves a problem for example.  The type, industry and style of innovation are irrelevant:  an innovation’s impact determines its qualification.

By now, you are probably asking, innovate, me changing my life, my destiny by innovating.  I don’t see it, or this isn’t me.  And hey, by the way, how many people really develop breakthrough innovations that can change their lives anyway?

OK, I can agree with these truths about true breakthrough innovation, but let’s go a little further to get our arms around innovation as a basic skill set that can
work for you before we move on looking for the next quick fix or shiny push
buttons that just don’t exist.  Along the way I will also show you how to innovate at work to grow personally and professionally…maybe even get you promoted by being seen as a Fast Tracker and go to person.

New skills- and three types of innovation

  1. Sustaining innovation- these are incremental variations, small and minor changes to a theme or project
  2. Breakout  innovation- those that significantly increase the level of play with an existing category.
  3. Disruptive innovation-something just short of break through innovation: yet large enough to cause a disruption to the current way of doing things

New skills-one simple action can change your life and your business-my personal story as an example.

So I’m playing golf on a really hot afternoon: mid 90’s and I can’t seem to drink enough water.  I’m in the middle of a sand trap 165 yards from the green when I look down and see a putter in my hand.  If you’re not a golfer, you may not realize that as a big problem, since a putter is used for short distances and rolling the balls on greens.

So now I realize I am probably dehydrated.  I get through the round and start thinking about how I can drink more water to avoid this problem in the future.  Everyone knows water is bland and not really fun to drink.  But when I think back to times when drinking it was easy, I remember the tastes and flavors of water that some eateries served:  lemon water, cucumber water,
even basil water.

Next was my AHA moment when I realized the common denominators were all flavors.  To make a long story short, I jumped both feet into the world of flavoring and developed the first natural flavor drops to enhance the taste of water specifically then on to tea, coffee and dairy products.

Innovation is actually an inherent talent.  That means everyone has it.  Surprisingly many of us don’t think we have this skill.  Let’s look at the power of innovation.  If you’ve ever marveled at somebody’s creative prowess, guess what, you can create and innovate too. It just takes time. Everyone is born creative. The box of crayons in kindergarten was not limited to those who possessed potential; because the truth is, everybody has potential.

You know how long it took to learn to ride a bike, or drive, or to never commit the same mistake again? It’s the same with innovation. It takes some practice and a lot of time before this skill set comes easily-when you want it, at the snap of a finger.

A single harmless snow flake can cause an avalanche.”

Reflective thinking is looking to the past. Reflective thinking involves personal consideration of one’s own learning.  It considers personal achievements and failures and asks what worked, what didn’t.  I wrote an entire post on it so you can always review it for more details…it’s time to move on.

Thinking and creativity are two essential skill sets for improving performance, getting ahead, getting hired and getting promoted.
